Boardwalk Rental Communities (TSX: BEI.UN) is a real estate investment trust focused on providing apartment buildings, and it's based in Calgary, Alberta.

Boardwalk began in 1984, as a private real estate company, by Sam and Van Kolias. These two brothers bought a 16-unit, unoccupied building in Calgary. They sold it six months later for double the price they paid.

It went public in 1994 on the Alberta Stock Exchange, and converted to a real estate investment trust in 2004. It's now Canada's largest owner of residential apartments, with over 31,000 units, 60,000 tenants - a total of 26 million square feet of rental space.

Sam Kolias is still president.
