American Campus Communities was the first real estate investment trust to go public in the niche of providing housing for the college student market.
American Campus New York Stock Exchange ticker symbol is ACC. Current president William C. Bayless and two investors started American Campus Lifestyle Companies in 1993. They first rehabbed and then managed a residence hall at the University of Texas.
In 1997 Reckson Partners became a majority partner and they changed their name to American Campus Communities. In 2004 had their Initial Public Offer - IPO. They own and manage high quality student housing (must not be anything like the dorm I spent my first college year in, or the off campus apartment where I spent my second year) -- they own 88 communities with over 54,000 beds and manage 145 student communities with over 92,000 beds.
ACC provides students with private bedrooms, Internet access, private baths, fully equipped kitchens, spacious living quarters and resort-style amenities. Whew! Nothing at all like where I lived as a student, on campus or off. My dorm room had minimal space, and the apartment I shared with three other students, and many of the student apartments I visited, were nearly slum quality.
