AIMCO (NYSE: AIV) is a real estate estate investment trust that is now the largest U.S. owner and operator of apartment complexes. They have 1,163 apartment communities with 202,337 apartments, in 46 states and the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Their headquarters are in Denver Colorado. They were founded in 1975. They held their IPO in 1994. The president and CEO is Keith Kimmel.
The Apartment Investment and Management Company engages in the acquisition, development, ownership, redevelopment and management of apartment complexes, especially B/B+ apartment buildings. They have nearly 750,000 residents.
They have a broad range of apartments, from conventional to "affordable" communities. "Affordable" means apartments primarily subsidized by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, and state housing agencies. Or they're financed with tax credits. This means they're occupied by poor people. This sounds like basic Section 8 housing. It also provides apartment management services to other property owners.
