AmREIT (AMX: AMY) is a full-service real estate investment trust based in Houston Texas. They invest in four of the seven top U.S. growth markets. (Houston, Dallas, South Texas and San Antonio/Austin) They concentrate on what they call Irreplaceable Corner commercial properties.
They have 70 properties with 3.4 million square feet. They also like to highlight their charitable activities of helping orphans find a home, and helping children with cancer -- Pathways for Little Feet.
They define irreplaceable corner properties as:
1. Located on a physical corner, in a major metropolitan area
2. High barriers to entry
3. High daytime and evening population
4. High count of cars per day
5. High average per capital income for the surrounding 3 to 5 miles around
They have such properties currently in operation, and under development.
AMY began as an idea in 1973 while its founder H. Kerr Taylor was riding a Triumph motorcycle through Europe. He noticed then that the great buildings of Europe were located on corners. It went public in 2003. They are also associated with the AmREIT Construction Company. They also launched REITPlus, Inc. a public, nontraded REIT. They have a number of funds -- scheduled to liquidate in coming years -- AmREIT Monthly Income and Growth Fund, Ltd., AmREIT Monthly Income and Growth Fund II, Ltd., AmREIT Monthly Income and Growth Fund III, Ltd., and AmREIT Monthly Income and Growth Fund IV, Ltd.
