Rayonier Inc (NYSE:RYN) is a real estate investment trust that focuses on timber land and related uses. It was founded in 1926 with the Rainier Pulp and Paper Company mill constructed in Shelton Washington. It was eventually acquired by ITT, but in 1994 was spun off from the ITT Corporation and became an independent publicly operated company again.
Rayonier Timberlands
On January 1, 2004 it becomes a real estate investment trust.
Rayonier owns, leases or manages 2.6 million acres of timberland in the United States (nine different states) and New Zealand. Therefore, they're one of the largest private owners of timber land in the U.S. All of their forests are certified by the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) Project. They sell timber for the pulp, paper, lumber and other wood products. Eastern Forest Resources (EFR) has its headquarters in Fernadina Beach Florida. Western Forest Resources (WFR) has its headquarters in Hoquiam Washington. Asia Pacific Forest Resources (APFR) has its headquarters in Auckland New Zealand, for Matariki Forests.
Rayonier also owns land that is becoming more valuable as real estate than as forests growing timber -- recreation, conservation and public infrastructure. This is especially true with the coastal counties along the Interstate 95 corridor running from Savannah Georgia to Daytona Florida, where they own 200,000 acres. In 2005 they formed a real estate development company subsidiary, TerraPointe LLC to handle this.
Their Performance Fibers group is a leading manufacturer of high purity, high-performance specialty cellulose fibers. They have customers in more than 40 countries for products ranging from LCD screens to pharmaceuticals. They also product absorbent materials fibers to make disposable diapers, incontinence pads and other such products.
Rayonier Inc is a REIT well-positioned to profit in the future from both timber demand from their forests, and tourist development.
