Ventas, Inc is a leading real estate investment trust in the healthcare field. They have 514 facilities in 43 states and 2 Canadian provinces. They have over 51,000 beds and senior housing units. They finance, own and lease healthcare related and senior housing properties, using triple net leases which means the tenant pays all the expenses. They also have pooled and multi-facility Master Leases.

Their New York Stock Exchange symbol is VTR. Ventas has 253 senior housing facilities, 41 hospitals, 192 skilled nursing facilities and 28 medical office buildings and various other healthcare real estate properties. Debra A. Cafaro is Chairman of the Board, President and Chief Executive Officer. They do have a dividend reinvestment plan.

Originally, the company was named Vencor. On May 1, 1998, Vencor split into two companies. Vencor (now known as Kindred Healthcare, Inc) kept the operations of the nursing centers and hospitals. Ventas remains owner of the nursing centers and hospitals. They became a real estate investment trust in 1999. On April 26, 2007 Ventas acquired the Sunrise Senior Living REIT and its 77 private pay senior housing communities.

In some states, the expansion of medical facilities is controlled by the need for companies to get a CON (certificate of need).

Ventas therefore is a REIT in a field that will continue to grow fast.
