Real Estate Investment Trusts in Ghana began with "Collective Investment Schemes." These are governed by Securities Industry (Amendment) Law 2000, Act 590, but there must have been an earlier law. They are covered by the Securities and Exchange Commission - Ghana.
Collective investment schemes can be either mutual funds -- much as we known them -- or unit trusts, much as REITs in the US are trusts.
HFC Real Estate Investment Trust (HFC REIT) was started by HFC (then The Home Finance Company). In 1995 it was approved by the Bank of Ghana acting for the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Apparently it works to build houses and flats.
Hopefully in the future more REIT companies will form in Ghana.
