American Capital Agency Corporation is a mortgage REIT (real estate investment trust) that invests only in mortgage backed securities secured by United States government agencies and related agencies -- that is, the Federal National Mortgage Association (better known as Fannie Mae or FNMA), the Government National Mortgage Association (better known as Ginnie Mae or GNMA) and the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation (better known as Freddie Mac or FHLMAC).

American Capital Agency is externally advised and managed by American Capital Agency Management LLC. This is a subsidiary of American Capital, a equity firm and global asset manager.
American Capital trades on the NASDAQ Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol AGNC. They do use leverage to multiply their results (which can increase both profits and losses). They were formed in 2008, and had their Initial Public Offering (IPO) in February 2008. Malon Wilkus is the Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer.
