Hatteras Financial Corporation is a mortgage real estate investment trust (mREIT) that invests in adjustable and hybrid adjustable rate single family residential mortgages pass-through securities guaranteed by agencies of the United States government such as Fannie Mae (the Federal National Mortgage Association), Ginnie Mae (the Government National Mortgage Association) and Freddie Mac ( the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation).

Hatteras Financial is externally managed by Atlantic Capital Advisors LLC, and their headquarters are in Winston Salem North Carolina.

Hatteras Financial Corp was incorporated in September 2007. Benjamin Hough is the Chairman, Chief Operating Officer and Director. It completed its IPO in April 2008.

This mortgage REIT uses short term funds to buy mortgage-backed securities (MBS) guaranteed by the government, which has proven it will back them. It uses interest rate swaps to manage the risk of a sharp rise in short term interest rates.
