Redwood Trust is a mortgage real estate investment trust with the New York Stock Exchange ticker symbol of RWT. They invest in, "credit-enhance," and securitize residential and commercial real estate loans.
Redwood Trust Securitized Real Estate Loans
Redwood Trust began business in 1994. They went public in August 1995. They now own or credit-enhance over 344,000 residential mortgages worth over $138 billion. They buy jumbo loans (with balances greater than $417,000) from banks and mortgage origination companies. They can be pooled together and sold in securities markets.
Since jumbo loan borrowers are generally more credit-worthy than people taking out smaller home loans, Redwood Trust's portfolio is apparently in better condition than many other lenders in today's subprime credit crisis.
