British Land Company (LSE: BLND) is a UK-REIT that started out as a company based in London in 1856.

BLND began as a way for ordinary people to have the right to vote. After the Reform Act of 1832, people could vote if they owned a "forty-bob freehold." Companies bought up large tracts of land, then sold freehold rights to obtain a rent of 40 shillings (bob), or two pounds per year, to qualify to vote.

British Land continued to operate as small real estate company. Almost all of its records and many of its properties were destroyed during the World War II bombings. On March 31, 1970 it merged with Union Property Holdings (London) Limited. Its Managing Director Sir John Ritblat built the company into a major player in corporate real estate.

On January 1, 2007 BLND became a real estate investment trust. Now they are one of the largest such companies in the United Kingdom, probably the second largest. They own or manage 13.5 billion pounds of property, of which their net equity is 8.5 billion pounds. Stephen Hester is CEO.

Their focus is on "Out of Town" (suburban) retail properties (66% of their portfolio) and office buildings in London (32% of their portfolio), and they're expanding into Western Europe.

Their concentrate on prime retail properties. In 2006 they began selling off properties where their retail tenants did not expect to do well. This helped prepare them for the credit crunch/recession of 2007-2009.
