Big Yellow Self Storage (LSE:BYG) is a UK-REIT based in Surrey. It's the top self-storage company in the U.K.
They currently have 73 centers in operation, have 7 more under development, and are looking to expand -- especially in South England and Greater London. They're also looking into the Midlands, the North of England and Scotland. They have a total of 215,000 square feet, but are looking to get to 4.5 million square feet.
Plus, they recently took over Armadillo, so those 10 stores are part of the Big Yellow company inventory.
For businesses, they can provide flexible storage areas, flexible warehouses and flexible office space.
Big Yellow Self Storage Goes Back to the Last Century
They started business in 1998 as Cubic Self Storage, but in January 1999 Big Yellow Self Storage Company. They were listed on the London Stock Exchange in June 2002. They converted to REIT status in January 2007. They are part of the FTSE 250 index. The Executive Chairman is Nicholas Vetch.
The financial crisis and recession has actually been good for Big Yellow's business, because it's in financial times that people have the most demand for storing items because of downsizing their living area or being forced to live in a different area.
Of course, even in good economic times there's a demand for self-storage facilities, and so Big Yellow Self-Storage is a Real Estate Investment Trust which should be able to do well in the years to come.
